Because “better” is in the eye of the beholder, and given that all adults involved are legal and consenting, there’s not really such a thing as “bad” pornography in an ethical, sex-positive culture. Better might just mean different — it might mean a more diverse selection that can give us new choices and show us things not found in most porn. That’s why I like MORE, because pornography’s danger is when it paints a limiting view on who gets to have sex and who likes what. When so many of us don’t have access to sex education or examples of sexual expression, the “one-porn-fits-all” approach creates and maintains stereotypes and even implies what is “normal” — and I think that is really what the heart of the issue is.

The Feminist Porn Awards, ingeniously created by Toronto’s women-owned sex toy store Good For Her, bring visibility to a small but growing porn market of content created outside of (and more and more recently, within) the predominant mainstream market. In order to be considered for an honor, the work either depicts genuine female pleasure, has a woman leading an integral creation of the work, or expands the boundaries of sexual representation on film and challenges stereotypes found in mainstream porn. I was thrilled to receive “Boundary Breaker” in 2010 for my work in the porn industry, specifically being present online and vocal about my experiences. I’m really flattered by the honor, because I think anyone can do this. Maybe I’m just one of the few right now.

The more positive reinforcement there is behind budding filmmakers, new companies, alternative views of sex, the more diversity we’ll see in the industry. I’ve been doing porn for the last seven years, and it’s just growing and growing! This year, I’m proud to have been involved with 10 11 of the nominated projects, including five six DVDs and five websites. WOW!

FUCKSTYLES features re-edited scenes from QueerPornTV, including a beautiful and artsy scene of myself and fellow genderqueer performer Papi Coxxx. Gush: The Official Guide to the G-Spot & Female Ejaculation features a solo scene within the context of Dr. Carol Queen’s beginner sex ed for couples. Live Sex Show was a live performance featuring myself and Nina Hartley filmed during the Center for Sex & Culture’s Masturbate-a-thon. What’s special about this particular film is that it includes explicit vaginal fisting, something usually cut out of most distributed DVDs, but a few sex-positive retailers are awesome enough to fight the censorship and carry it! Mommy is Coming is Cheryl Dunye’s explicit raunch comedy filmed in Berlin; in it I play Teo and have a lighthearted BDSM scene with Judy Minx and Lil Harlow. It premiered at Berlinale and is now hitting film festivals across the globe! Taxi Vol 2 includes an emotionally intense scene with myself and Dallas Fivestar, as well as an AVN Nominated three-way with Madison Young and Nic Switch. Padded Submissives includes a scene with Kellly Shibari and Courtney Trouble, which I shot at Jamye Waxman’s crib. BobbiStarr.com includes a POV scene with me and Bobbi from her film Vicarious. CrashPadSeries.com is directed by Shine Louise Houston and includes several scenes I am in — this summer is it’s 5th Anniversary and it has almost 200 episodes! NoFauxxx.com is Courtney Trouble’s first website, including great photos and scenes from her Good Releasing films and more. And my own site JizLee.com — Yes, this one! — is nominated and includes my membership section “Karma Pervs“, an erotic philanthropic art project where I raise funds for sex-positive, queer and kink friendly non-profits and causes. Phew!

The event will be a series of short presentations, followed by a panel on the intersections of erotic performance art and pornography. It’s a topic near and dear to my heart, as my own forays into pornography began through dance, modeling, and explicit performance art as I found my comfort-levels with my naked body and gender expression through performance. In many ways, the messages I strove to express in my early performance art days found a place within queer pornography. Naturally, there’s a lot more I could say on the subject, but perhaps that can be a blog post for another date. In the meantime, if you’re in Austin, Texas, come to the event!

Femina Potens Art Gallery is on the road, and the first stop is SXSW! 

Join our panel of feminists, queer artists, activists, counter-culture renegades and performance artists for a night of interactive performance art, film screenings, and artist panel discussion on the Intersections of Erotic Performance Art & Pornography.

Where does conceptual performance work end and where does our libido begin?  Is queer feminist pornography inherently progressive? How do queer performance artists who are also in radical pornography decipher the difference between what is art and what is porn? These are just some of the questions we will examine through film, art, and performance.

Performers include Coral Aorta,  Jiz Lee, Kitty Stryker, with films by  Madison Young, Too Much Pussy by  Emilie Jouvet, and Tooth and Nail by Rozen Debowe and Dylan Ryan, as well as a photo documentary of Maxine Holloway.

Panel discussion will be hosted by Julie Gillis of Austin’s  BedPost Confessions.

PRESENTER BIOS

Coral Aorta, a shape-shifting femme creature, has been making erotic work since she was legal to do so (and some before then).  She currently earns her rent as a cam show performer at Kink.com and nude dancer at The Lusty Lady peepshow in San Francisco.  When not hustling live or digital customers, Coral works with the art organization Femina Potens, performs at BDSM and burlesque shows, wrestles in lube, and tools with the various ways to translate her sexually surreal existence into an art context.

Dylan Ryan, a self-proclaimed Porn Superhero and gender-bending superstar, is “making the world a better place, one porn at a time”.  Ryan has worked with a multitude of pornographers, from mainstream mega-company Hustler to BDSM aficionados Kink.com to San Francisco queer porn favorites Crash Pad Series, Nofauxxx, and Queer Porn TV.

Emilie Jouvet is a photographer and filmmaker whose personal, artistic, and political work shows her friends and lovers in their intimacy, far away from the clichés of the standard gay representations.  Her models — strong femmes, sweet butches, wild dykes, feminists and queers from the underground Parisian and European art scene — travel between genders in Jouvet’s work, which shows their sexy, troubled and confusing identities.  Her provocative art-videos are shown in international exhibitions, queer festivals, and on television.  Jouvet was a member of the art organization “QueerFactory” before founding her own queer and feminist art organizations: “Les Très Très Méchantes Filles” with D.Juncutt, and “Fem Menace” with Wendy Delorme, Louise De Ville and Judy Minx.  Since making “One Night Stand”, her first feature porn movie and the first queer porn to come out of France, Jouvet has kept a blog diary of her filming experience about interaction between Art, Gender, Feminism and Pornography.  “One Night Stand” won first prize in the Berlin Porn Film Festival 2006, the special prize of the jury at Copenhagen Film Fest 2007, the first lesbian prize in Amsterdam in 2008 and a Feminist Porn Award in 2009.  Her latest short film, “THE APPLE”, won first prize in Madrid’s festival in 2009 and Seattle’s most innovative short film awards.  Her new film, “TOO Much Pussy! FEMINIST SLUTS, A Queer X Show” is a sex-positive road movie and documentary about the wild adventures of seven women traveling around Europe in a van and recording the salacious happenings of their queegr performance art tour.

Julie Gillis is an artist, producer and social justice activist. As a parent, she believes in advocating for comprehensive age appropriate sex ed in the schools, and as a grown up she believes in sexual literacy and equal rights in relationships.  While comedy will always be part of her performance and consulting, one must never underestimate how serious she is about making this world a better place for people to love and be loved. She writes at The Austin Chronicle, Good Vibes Magazine and JulieGillis.com.

Kitty Stryker is a curvaceous courtesan splitting her time between tying people up in San Francisco alleyways and helping clients (both able-bodied and not) realize their sexual possibilities in London. In her copious free time, Kitty is an Erotic Award winner, a founding member of Kinky Salon London, a guest lecturer about sex work, and a queer femme Daddy to her boy. Kitty blogs about her professional and personal experiences at Purrversatility.

Madison Young is an international award-winning feminist porn star, director, gallerist, artist, and new mom. She has been directing and performing in erotic films for nearly a decade and has won great acclaim for her video line, Madison Young Productions, and her network of erotic web sites, the Feminist Porn Network. She has been awarded multiple feminist porn awards including “Indie Porn Pioneer” of the year and has received numerous AVN nominations for her films.  Her films have screened at film festivals throughout the States, Europe, and Australia. Young, who has been called a “sex-positive Tasmanian devil”, values sexual education in her work and has taught workshops, lectures, and acted as a panelist on the topics of sexuality, feminism and pornography, and kink across the around the world including at Yale University and UC Berkeley.  Her professional trajectory spans past performing in over a hundred adult films and directing 26 films for her own production company to include her contributions to the art world.  Under the name Madison Young, she has handled the artistic curation of over a hundred art exhibitions over the past decade, not only for Femina Potens Art Gallery but also for The National Queer Arts Festival, SOMARTS, The SF LGBT Center, and the Traveling Erotic Art Show.

Maxine Holloway is a porn performer, artist, sex-educator, webmistress and filmmaker. She creates and collaborates with the Bay Area’s hottest and the queerest. Her co-directorial debut film with Lexxx Sloan, ‘The Outlaw’, was featured and awarded in the 2010 Good Vibrations Erotic Film Festival. Certified in Sex-ED and HIV/STI Prevention, her educational workshops focus on sexual-health and sexual exploration. She recently started a live sex show performance troop with colleague Ava Solanas called ‘Cum & Glitter’.  Her favorite things to discuss are feminism, squirting, sexual fantasy, fetishes, sex worker stigmas, country music and syphilis.

A fierce femme who knows what she wants, Rozen DeBowe is a force blazing on the porn radar. Her versatile screen presence allows her to deliver dynamic performances with all of her co-stars. She began her career with Pink & White Productions and has since worked with Kink.com, NoFauxxx, Girlfriends Films, and Juicy Pink Box. When not creating art with her body, Rozen is a music writer and a video editor/director.

MOMMY IS COMING is a raunch comedy directed by Cheryl Dunye and co-written by Sarah Schulman, and produced by Dunye, Claus Matthes, and Jürgen Brüning, who you might recognize as the producer of Bruce LaBruce’s works, such as LA ZOMBIE.

MOMMY is a sexually explict feature, an “adult comedy”, which I think will be a big hit for fans of queer porn. It is also one of five films selected for the Panorama that is female-directed. It stars Lil Harlow (Dylan), Papí Coxxx (Claudia/Claude), and Maggie Tapert (Helen). There’s also HOT appearances by Sadie Lune, Océan LeRoy, Carrie Gray, Mad Kate, dj Metzgerei, Kay, Pau, Marit Östberg and others — it’s an amazing international cast! I play Teo, Dylan’s best-friend and BDSM play-pal, and the two of us enjoy a three-way with Judy Minx. I also have a short scene with Stefan Kuschner (Jay) in the Axel hotel lobby, where much of the film takes place.

MOMMY IS COMING is raunchy queer sex filled romance set in the international creative melting pot Berlin. A take on screwball romantic comedies, director Cheryl Dunye (THE WATERMELON WOMAN, STRANGER INSIDE, THE OWLS) adds sexual imagery to her ingenious form of storytelling. Structured like an off beat fairy tale, we follow Claudia, Dylan and Helen as they bumble their way through hotels, queer Berlin nightlife, and their hearts only to realize that in matters of love it sometimes pays to listen to your Mommy.

Legendary American underground director Cheryl Dunye has a penchant for sex, fun, gender-bending and taboo breaking. She takes great relish in this humorous tale of three women’s sexual journey that is both a buoyant reference to and a self-confidently queer interpretation of a porn scenario. Dunye will be familiar to Berlinale audiences from her Teddy Award-winning WATERMELON WOMAN (1996). She returned to the Panorama in 2010 with THE OWLS.

Dylan is having troubles with her girlfriend Claudia: while Dylan mostly wants sex, Claudia is looking for affection. To top it all, her mother Helen just announced her visit. Set in the international creative melting pot Berlin, this raunchy, explicit romantic comedy of errors confronts the last lesbian taboo: Mommy.

Fleshbot.com stands out as a pivotal website for me because it was one of the first — and most mainstream — of porn sites to respect my gender pronouns. In addition, Fleshbot acts as a model of sex-positivity, being one of the few mainstream porn websites to post accurate sex ed and also to moderate the comments sections with respectful and educated information. And besides all of that goodness, Fleshbot has also been a huge supporter of my work. I was awarded Fleshbot Crush Object, and throughout the years the site has continued to promote queer pornography as well as my work with Karma Pervs. Earlier this year I was even honored to be a part of Fleshbot’s 2011 AVN Photoshoot with Stoya! Basically, I’m flattered beyond belief and am grateful to their staff Lux Alptraum, Ottimo Massimo,  Sailor Ripley, and others, who keep multiple posts coming on the daily. I can’t wait to hug them all in person!

This trip to New York will be like a mini-vacation. After traveling to the Berlin Porn Film Festival recently and then to LA to shoot for my friend Remy’s awesome new clothing company RH Denim, I feel like I need to just kick back and have fun.

Simply stated – This is What I want is a 4 day festival of new work that deal with sex created by SF/Bay Area dance and performance artists. Within this forum, a bunch of exceedingly smart and crafty artists get together and tell the truth about some things that otherwise might be kept silent. Produced by: Jesse Hewit, Rachael Dichter and THEOFFCENTER; Curated by: Jesse Hewit, Rachael Dichter, Keith Hennessy, Jiz Lee, and Michelle Tea. (Read all about it.)

I was honored to help curate this show, a difficult job — proof that the desire for this kind of performative dialog is loud and strong. Join me in watching thirteen artists show us what they want. I want you to come.

Last year I attended the 1st Ecosexual Symposium held in Los Angeles, presenting on Green Porn with director Carlos Batts and his muse (and my doll) April Flores. We showed a clip from the waterfall scene in Dangerous Curves featuring April, Syd Blakovich, and myself. The scene was also presented for this year’s symposium events at an ecosexual queer porn screening. It was a pleasure to watch it again in a garden at night with a bunch of queers, beers, and blankets. Kitty Stryker was there and blogged about it on PurrVersatility. This year I’m also moderating the “Ecosex & Art” Panel, which will be held at the Center for Sex & Culture 2:30-4pm today.

What defines ecosexual art, or ecorotic art? Green Porn? The Urban Dictionary defines “Ecosexual” as: A term describing a person, in a dating sense, who is social and environmentally conscious. Similar to metrosexual, but for someone who wears and buys organic items and drives a hybrid car.
ie: I would love to date an ecosexual person so we can go to the farmers market together.

In our fast food culture, we consume fast sex. If there’s a slow foods movement, what would a slow sex movement look like? As Annie says, “We aim to make the environmental movement more fun, sexy, and diverse.” Bringing art into the equation is the key and Ecosexual is where art meets theory, meets practice, meets activism. Keith Bowers writes in the SF Weekly, Ecosex “involves using sex and sexuality to raise awareness about environmental and sustainability issues. More than “doing it green,” they say, it’s a way to make the movement itself more sexy and fun.” I see the ecosexual movement as a beautiful and highly creative way to bring awareness to the joys of sexual pleasure and human life. Though you may have found this blog through porn, I also have a background in art and performance, and am from Hawai`i where the connection to the land (`Aina) was a large part of my upbringing. So I’m thrilled to participate in the symposium and introduce Ecosex & Art’s panelists Tessa Wills, Penny Slinger, Tania Hammidi, and Dylan Bolles & Sasha Hom.

Tessa Wills is a choreographer and a Live Artist. Her current concerns in practice are wounds, punctures, liminality and the movement organizing principles of birds. Penny Slinger is an artist, writer and filmmaker who has not only championed the liberation of sexuality and the feminine, but actively forged new paths. Her art and techniques have been on the cutting edge of new realities since she emerged onto the London art scene at the end of the 1960s. Using herself as her own muse, she stripped away the layers of the feminine psyche as ‘the ultimate expose’ in photocollages and sculptures featuring life casts. Her artwork has been widely exhibited and a number of books and videos of her work have been published. She co-authored and illustrated ‘Sexual Secrets, The Alchemy of Ecstasy’ (1979), a seminal work bringing Tantra to a wider audience. Her current work, the 64 Dakini Oracle, has been many years in the making. The images are highly detailed digital collages, which Penny recognizes as a new medium for fine art. So the saga continues, and I was stoked to return with the swoon-inducing STOYA, who I had the utmost pleasure posing with during the AVN Awards for Fleshbot. Molly invited Stoya and I to pose for a riveting “Jack the Ripper” themed event. (Nice to see it was Critic’s Pick on Time OUT New York and a great interview of Molly in FlavorWire.)

Dr Sketchy’s Jack the Ripper was sexy, gruesome, and also political with a surprise murder and flyers. We used the event as a political platform to raise awareness for Red Umbrella Project‘s Protect, Don’t Persecute Campaign. Jack’s victims are prostitutes, however we flipped the narrative with an alternative ending where his last murder attempt turns the knife on him. We also made announcements and passed around flyers for Protect, Don’t Persecute.

From Dr. Sketchy’s Website: Our theme was Jack the Ripper – the 19th century murderer of 5 prostitutes in and around Whitechapel.  We hoped to raise awareness that violence against sex workers is still a problem today, especially in recent years, with the so-called “Long Island Ripper” who has killed at least 4 in and around Suffolk county, very close to our home.  Specifically, we wished to raise support of the Red Umbrella Project’s “Protect, Don’t Persecute” campaign to grant amnesty to sex workers providing information that may lead to the apprehension of this murderer.  The Whitechapel Murderer was never arrested, but we want to do all we can to prevent history from repeating.

It’s May, which for the past several years has been declared and celebrated as National Masturbation Month. First off, thank you to all my friends/fans/supporters who helped me meet my fundraising goal to cover the cost of my trip to Toronto to attend the ceremony and festivities. I hope you enjoy the DVDs I sent you.

I arrived Thursday night for the PUBLIC PROVOCATIVE PORN screening, featuring ArtCore and Sola by Carlos Batts, Jaiya, clips of Drew DeVeaux, and a sneak peak at Cheryl Dunye‘s highly anticipated “MOMMY IS COMING“, which I shot in Berlin last August. The screening was a nice display of the artists’ works and the panel discussion hosted by Lorraine Hewitt was short and well-focused. Tristan Taormino gave the night’s introduction with a rousing speech. One of my favorite of her one-liners: “Feminist Porn is a mouthful.”

On Friday, I had a brunch-time interview and then met up with Maxwell Lander for a photoshoot at Loft 404. Here’s a quick snapshot, more to come later. After a delicious dinner at Fressen with my Toronto roomies Bobbi Starr & Lux Alptraum, we were off to the Awards.

The ceremony was high-energy and packed full of women, queers, porn-lovers, and all kinds of happy, brilliant, bubbly folks. There were a lot of nominations this year, and I was particularly excited to see more Los Angeles-based porn folks nominated and in attendance. I was also happy to see two that I’ve participated in, QueerPorn.TV and Kelly Shibari’s PaddedKINK.com, and Shine Louise Houston‘s new masculine-sexuality site HeavenlySpire.com awarded. Speaking of masculinity, this year Good For Her showed a clip of “Masculine Eye Candy for the Feminist Smut Lover” which highlighted clips of James Deen, Mickey Mod, Danny Wylde, Wolf Hudson, and Billy Castro (I would have loved to have seen Keni Styles added to this list!). I wish they all could have been there to soak it in. I also missed my SF Porn Posse who were not able to attend this year: Ken Rowe (Trannywood), Madison Young, Dylan Ryan, Syd Blakovich, and Courtney Trouble. In their absence, Shine, Drew, April Flores & Carlos, Tina Horn and myself represented, along with HotMoviesForHer‘s JD Bauchery.

I performed in twelve nominations this year (joked about going for the “slut award” with co-host Ryan), and 4 projects were awarded: TAXI, Billy Castro Does the Mission, QueerPorn.tv and PaddedKINK.com. In the times between the handing of awards, I had the pleasure to make acquaintances with Lee Roy Myers and Honey, and I also got to meet the two cute faces behind fuckyeahjizlee.tumblr.com!

My Toronto weekend came to an end on Saturday night at the play party SWITCH presented by ASLAN Leather. I shot a scene that was livestreamed for SSJ Productions, a new company by Sophia St. James. My co-stars were Mr. Gray and the foxy Sophia herself. SWITCH was located at a beautiful club that had a large heated outdoor swimming pool. I spent the remainder of the night relaxing and chatting with Tobi Hill-Meyer, Mommy Fiercest, Strap-on Jo, Drew, Nic Switch, and many others.
