The fine graphic novels of R. Kikuo Johnson
by Jiz Lee ~ August 27, 2008
I’m going back home very soon and remembered that I’ve been meaning to post about my friend R. Kikuo Johnson.
A friend from grade school, he’s now a successful comic/graphic novel illustrator. His first publication, Night Fisher, is a story based on his adolescent experiences growing up on Maui. He sent it to me some time late in college, and it gives me nostalgia and reconnection with home every time I open it.
(Can I just say that in 3rd grade, I TOTALLY won 1st place in our county’s Elementary School Art Contest, and he only got, like 2nd place. So there.)
Hehe… ; ) Life catches up with us, and I thought to check out his website again.
And this struck me.

You can find more of R. Kikuo’s work at www.seabread.com.

That truly is a beautiful picture, subtle but strong.
I really love this piece, even if it is taken straight from the movie: http://www.paolorivera.com/seabread.com/pages/gallerypeices/SwankHillary.html
Why are all your friends so cool?

Oooh I loved the Boys Don’t Cry one, too.
R. Kikuo Johnson is way cool. He almost intimidates me if it weren’t for the fact that he’s humble as hell (which of course makes him even cooler). I’m so proud of his success. Yey.
